Mobility + Ability = Toddler Fun

11.13I have had a lot of toddlers over the years being a mother of eight.  Mason is not yet two years old and finding his stride in his own way.  Now that he is much more in control of his wheelchair he’s using it to get into things.  In these pictures he is reprogramming the dishwasher, opening the refrigerator, and putting away his cup of milk.

I am grateful for the mobility Mason gains with his wheelchair.  More than that, I am grateful that the child we were told would probably have some brain damage is developing his abilities on his own timetable.  He loves to crawl around, climb, and explore.  His wheelchair gives him a new height and way to explore.

He is one smart cookie and It is fun to watch him figure out ways to do what he wants!

  1. I love this! This is awesome! Thanks so much for giving me some sort of insight. I came upon a photo of a swing the other day that was at a playground, and it was built just for wheelchairs. It made me think of Mason. He'd probably like it- if not now, when he got a bit older. : )

  2. I've seen those in catalogs before! For now we put him in a bucket seat swing we picked up on Amazon.

  3. I am always at awe of children with special needs. It's s easy for people on the outside {like me} to see all the things they can't do and their limitations. Thank you for being so open about what Mason can do and the strides that he is making. I have never honestly ever thought that a child with special needs would have a "normal" life. But you have shown me different!! He is just like my children with his own personality and mind. Getting into things and wanting certain things his way, just like every other kid. Thank you for sharing his life with every one else!

  4. Leah,
I know what you mean! I had very little experience with special needs before Mason and that was limited to caring for an autistic girl - so not physical disability. This is all new territory for me and I get excited over every little thing Mason figures out - and sad over some things I know he won't. I'm glad to share Mason!
